Great article. Reminded me of an argument explaining the "he/I dindu nuffin" response. Basically, they can't even empathize with themselves except in the very moment. The "I" of 5 minutes ago that stabbed someone isn't the same "I" of right now, hence they actually believe "I dindu nuffin" even if covered in blood, because that nigger of 5 minutes did the stabbing. Not the nigger of right-now.

Kind of like if someone accused you of breaking something when you were 5 years old, you'd likely defend yourself by saying that was so long ago it was effectively a different person, and you shouldn't be held responsible for that other person that you were so many decades ago.

This lack of empathy for not-current self also helps to explain a high time preference. There are studies showing that low time preference is basically having empathy with your future self, but if you have no empathy and/or no sense of any self but that of the present self, then it never makes any sense to worry about the future. Because they have no sense of that future person and/or no empathy with that future person.
