As soon as you start looking you see it everywhere.

Fantastic breakdown. A thought occurs that after the past 25 years of stagnation and relative cultural continuity, we are starting to see some early indicators of an entirely chaotic world. People think it is already chaotic enough, but just imagine what happens when these domestic issues start to cook off and everyone starts to realize that their piece of the pie is getting smaller unless they start taking names. We are headed for a dissolution of empires; entire army groups will sever ties with their governments, administrations will be wiped out by dedicated cartels or guerilla fighters, mercenaries become both necessary and legendary once again.

Truly, Kojima is war by other means . . .

Kulak's avatar

Yes exactly! The future of warfare has not nearly stopped getting to Kojima, as things advance we'll see more and more plotpoints and characters seemingly take place in reality.

I'm working on several pieces arround Paramilitaries and mercenaries coming up

Hideo Kojima shit-talking the player with exquisite Japanese politeness is going to be rattling around in my head for a long, long time.

I only ever played MSG3. I remember being baffled and frustrated by the philosophy of war and soldiering that the game hits you with. I was too young to realize that this was deliberate, that Kojima was depicting a fallen, cynical world.

Now that I'm older, this weird fusion of conspiracy, horror, metaphysics and realism is fascinating to me.

Kulak's avatar

It's so fascinating....

It's also incredible because Kojima has a completely different conception of WHY soldiers fight, so has his American war hero talking about Duty to the Mission and Duty to the End... Samurai ethics, instead of all the thing Americans discuss when they talk about duty and their oaths, etc.

It's ever so slightly culturally disjointed from real life, and gives it a real otherworldly timeless quality.

Great article. I have been saying for years that "social media" is a Psycho Mantis simulator.

Also, this is why I have a "Kojima Rule," which is that even if an artist's work isn't always for me (I don't want to play an Amazon Delivery sim as Norman Reedus with a baby in a Ghostbusters' backpack, for example... but I believe Kojima does!), I am damn glad they are out there doing there thing, marching to their own drummer, "Kojima-ing" as hard as they can, as it were.

There is much to consider in this article, but there is one thing we *do* know for sure: "Snakes don't belong in Alaska."

With the decapitation of Venezuela, the pending strike on Cuba, and the now quagmire in Iran (perhaps the exception that proves the rule) Kojima’s thesis that nuclear weapons are the only guarantor of sovereignty is vindicated

Have you been keeping up with Roxy's War Diaries from Ukraine?

Kulak's avatar

No I haven't.

Do you recommend it? What's some take aways/a piece your recommend?

The Prince of Hammers's avatar

I do recommend it, particularly #7 (Atonement) which is written in the hospital as he recovers from shrapnel destroying his legs and chlorine gas dissolving the lining of his esophagus and wind pipe.

The article covers some of the limitations of drone warfare (such as rain cutting FPV range) and I generally think you'd enjoy it.

I think you'll also appreciate Roxy as an author. I asked him what it'd take for him to retire in light of his injuries and some musings about the future and he told me that he'd "retire" after the war ends up until the next one starts.

Here's the article link for convenience:

I grew up on MGS1 - 4 (didn't play 5 and have no drive to. MGS died with Solid Snake) and have been obsessed with the social implications of MGS2's story for going on a decade. The social feeds and AI content curation was to the be expected, but the last few sections on how the real world of warfare is shaping into the picture MGS2 and 4 paints, is beyond the scope of an article in it's full breadth.

Kulak's avatar

I saw this!

No Idea what the implications will be.

I always thought "Shell 2" in MGS 2 was way smaller and shorter than it should have been.

Well this one is paid. But It'll come out of paywall in a few weeks.

I realized I really need to get serious and incentivize people to pay if I'm ever going to stop being poor.
