Hollywood does not understand war… Indeed it doesn’t understand a lot of things.
Politics, crime, mass surveillance, human psychology, counter-insurgency, basic physics… accounting (I’m as surprised as you)…
Hollywood consistently misrepresents everything to do with modern combat, espionage, and criminal operations…
However there are exceptions.
Films either from other countries or obscure experiments from decades past, that not only capture the essence of their subject, but actually act as mini-courses on often some advanced parts of crime, war, and espionage that you’d never otherwise expect.
Originally I’d planned to create a “movie list” like many substackers do… going through some of my favorite films that accurately an impressively lay out core and sometime quite advanced military concepts…. Then I realized I basically wanted to do essays and podcast episodes on each of them to discuss why they are so unique, what they get so right, and that this would take forever…
So INSTEAD I’m inviting all of you to join in on the fun.
We will be hosting Semi-weekly Film Nights whilst I’m semi shut-in in the blistering Canadian winter (at Variable dates and times to allow for our international audience)

Not joining discord, but one of the best educational movies on sportiness is "The Battle of Algiers (1966)"
It doesn't have as much violence as you'd think, and few if any big battles (depending on how you define 'big'), and I'm sure lots of gun weirdos will be shrieking about how they use substandard gear and should have used a blah blah blah. What is shows is a degenerated, beat-down people responding to messages of cultural renewal, like shaming and beating drunks in public, and shooting pimps. Leading to young men searching for a higher purpose joining up.
